It turns out that lifeguarding isn’t the only side hustle for teens looking to make money this summer. As summer jobs begin to diversify, Millburn students have revolutionized the working field. From dog walking to swimming lessons to babysitting, there are a multitude of jobs Millburn teenagers are working this summer that give them flexibility and even an opportunity to give back to the community. The truth is that a lot of students have taken an interest in summer jobs, which not only gives them independence but also financial responsibility and a sense of confidence.

Jiya Jaisinghani is an 11th grader at Millburn High School who has recently taken up an interest in children's piano lessons this summer. “This past summer, I decided I wanted to extend one of my most prominent passions to little kids. Ever since I was little, I have been playing piano, and I wanted to bring that skill to kids. I started to teach kids around the neighborhood; kids that never played and kids that just wanted help,” she explained. This is an example of how teenagers are being creative and innovative by turning their hobbies into a way for them to make money. A lot of these jobs are skill-based, in which teenagers teach something they already know and love well. She then goes on to say. “It started as a small job and slowly expanded and became a huge part of my life. The job provided me with a great work-life balance and made me so happy!” Jaisinghani was able to transform her love for music into a summer job. Students today are finding creative ways to turn their hobbies into a form of income.

Challenges do arise when it comes to students working while trying to balance school and other extracurricular activities. Many students note that they try to finish homework before work and can sometimes find trouble trying to balance a job with school, their social life, and sports.

All in all, teens working jobs pose a great learning experience. For many teens, working provides them with a sense of confidence. When one works for their own money, they feel more independent and confident in themselves. It also goes a long way in teaching about money management and how important it is to save and spend wisely. Furthermore, teenagers working jobs are able to learn about teamwork and how to communicate with other co-workers and their boss. Working as a teenager, no matter what the job is, provides necessary skills that stay throughout high school, college, and even adulthood.

It’s amazing to see how many teenagers can utilize their time by effectively doing what they love while also making a profit. Not only do teenagers working jobs achieve a sense of independence and confidence, but they also bring back a sense of energy and liveliness in the town. They are able to give back by teaching skills or providing a service while also doing what they love.
